Week 3: Lockdown Extended

Looking over Limerick

Although this week felt fairly uneventful, a few notable big-picture events occurred. Classes began at the University of Limerick, which gave some much-needed (or much-dreaded) structure to the days of stir-crazy students. Lectures primarily introduced each course and outlined the semester ahead (essentially "syllabus week"). The courses appear mostly structured on lecture content and independent learning, with typically one or two large assignments due at the end of the semester. Most of our modules are exercise and psychology based; I found the introductory material quite interesting and I'm excited for the course content ahead.

Educational excursion to the city

Since our self-isolation period is over, we were able to venture into the city of Limerick (within a 5K radius). The local milk market, grocery store, St. Mary's Cathedral, and St. John's Castle fulfilled only essential and educational purposes. We also rented bikes from village reception on several occasions. Biking again felt amazing; it afforded the ability to travel more quickly, explore more of Limerick's surroundings, and have an alternative to running/walking. I also ordered some resistance bands from Amazon UK that arrived this week. Although lack of access to the gym and pool is disappointing, the exercise situation has improved and we are making the best of it.

Looking forward to future freedom!

On a less positive note, the Irish government extended the national Level 5 lockdown until March 5th. The number of cases has been dropping significantly and the lockdown was projected to lift on January 31st, so the extension was a surprise and major disappointment. Travel within the country is restricted for now, but we are thankful for the local surroundings and looking forward to day and weekend trips in the future. Until then, we hope to use the time effectively to work ahead on assignments, lessening the load for later when traveling is an option again. Fingers crossed for more freedom in the future!
